Gastrointestinal & Gut Health
Gastrointestinal Nutrition
A healthy, well-functioning digestive system protects us from infection, regulates our metabolism, and gives us more energy and vitality. A well-nourished gut has a role in improving both our physical and mental health on a daily basis. Many Australians live with symptoms of poor digestion without even realising it.
Constipation & Diverticular Disease
Constipation & diverticular disease are very common complaints in adults. Diverticular disease is a condition where small bulges and abnormal pouches develop in the wall of the large intestine. The pouches result from increased pressure in the bowel caused by constipation. It tends to show little to no symptoms and is very common in people over the age of 40.
What is Constipation?
Constipation is the inability to pass regular stools. The common causes of constipation include not eating enough daily fibre, not consuming enough fluids and a lack of daily exercise. If you struggle with regular constipation and find yourself reaching for laxatives, you may find there is an easier and healthier remedy.
The best constipation remedy is eating more fibre, plus drinking extra fluid. Fibre is found in plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes (beans, chickpeas and lentils), nuts, seeds, and wholegrain foods. Fibre helps to keep everything moving through your gut. It keeps you regular. It adds bulk to your stools and absorbs water so that your stools are soft and easier to pass. Fibre also feeds the bacteria in your gut, helping to promote their growth. Try to add extra high fibre foods to your diet and a few extra glasses of water. Do this before reaching for laxatives to manage constipation.
